BIKE TO
RAISE THE BAR (An open letter from Damascus Rotary Club President James Kerich) |
Dear Cyclist,
In November 1999, Dr. Jerry D. Weast, Superintendent of Schools for Montgomery County, Maryland, issued a new dream for the school district — "Our Call to Action: Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap, Because All Children Matter."
This vision outlined an educational process designed to raise the academic achievement of all students and close the gap in student performance among racial and ethnic groups. The document, prompted by key test indicators remaining below expectations in the County, outlined a need for shared responsibility and commitment between schools, county government, businesses, non-profit providers and the faith community.
To assist our school cluster in meeting the challenges faced, we’re asking you to ride and raise money to help the Rotary Club of Damascus help the school cluster achieve its goal to improve student performance and close the gap by race and ethnic origin. The net proceeds raised when you Cycle for Education will be distributed back to the Damascus Cluster of Schools in the form of grants to assist them in providing the highest level of education in the State.
You have the power to heighten the expectation of students, facility and administrators of our school cluster. Won’t you help us raise the bar and close the gap? Join us Saturday, October 28, 2000 — for your kids and all kids of the Upper Montgomery County Schools!
Many thanks!
James Kerich President Rotary Club of Damascus
