| The world's first service club was the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA. The club was formed 23 February, 1905 by lawyer Paul P Harris and three friends: a merchant, a coal dealer, and a mining engineer. Harris wished to recapture the friendly spirit he had felt in a small town where he grew up. |
Rotary's Early Goals
|
The first Rotary club's goal was to promote fellowship among
its members. Because of the timely appeal of its message, word of the club soon spread, and other businessmen were invited to join. By the end of 1905, the Rotary Club of Chicago had 30 members. Three years later a second club was formed in San Francisco, California, USA. As Rotary grew its focus shifted to service and civic obligations. |
The Rotary Mission Today
|
The main objective of Rotary today is service in the community and throughout the world. Rotarians build goodwill and peace, perform humanitarian deeds, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. Hence, our motto, "Service Above Self." | |
| Today there are approximately 1.2 million Rotarians in 28,000 clubs in 155 countries worldwide. Each individual club, such as the Rotary Club of Damascus, applies the service precept in accordance with its local needs and interests as well as in concert with broader Rotary International objectives. |
