Rotary International is the world’s first service organization. The organization began in 1905 as an alliance of business and professional leaders seeking an enclave of fellowship, but by 1911 it had developed into an international humanitarian organization focused on serving the needs of the local communities.

The core of Rotary International is a global network of Rotary Clubs. Through this network, clubs are able to undertake local and international projects by partnering with clubs in other parts of the country or world.

Since its early days, the organization has had a profound impact on our everyday life.

  • 1919 – Rotarians from Ohio establish the forerunner of the National Easter Seals Society

  • 1943 – A Rotary conference in London plants the seed for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established in 1946

  • 1985 – Rotary International launches PolioPlus, a global program to eradicate polio

Today there are about 1.2 million Rotarians working in 30,150 Rotary Clubs in approximately 163 countries. Each club meets weekly to determine what projects it will initiate or support. Because each club is autonomous, service projects are determined based on local needs, interests and abilities of its members.
